Where do you start an older child?
As close to the beginning as possible. All the books in the Robinson Curriculum are old books, therefore the language is quite a bit different. The first books are often necessary for an older child to read to get used to the language. The first two McGuffey readers, and the nursery rhyme book could be skipped for an older child, plus even most of the Bailey books. All the history books should be read, however no matter how early they are in the reading list. One parent made the rule for her children to read all the history books, and at least one of each series book. (Example one Bailey book, one Alger book, one book on the Five Little Peppers.)Does a younger child really have to do 5 hours of work a day?All the vocabulary words should be learned if at all possible, even for the books that you allow your child to skip. If however the student only has a couple years left of school, don't stress the issue. The important thing is that they are reading good literature, are increasing their vocabulary as much as they are able to, and that they are learning how to teach themselves. Remember their education will continue after high school, and they can continue to use the Robinson Curriculum into their adulthood. There are many parents who are using the Robinson Curriculum with their children, starting with the beginning books!
No, that is a goal to work towards. A beginning student can not be expected to sit at a desk for 5 hours. Do only what the child can handle. A little bit of math, one sentence of copy work, and a little bit of reading out loud. A beginning student can easily finish all their school work in 1 or 2 hours. As they get older and are able to handle more work, you can gradually increase the required amount of hours. How do you print the phonics, vocabulary and math flash cards?
How do you print only one page of the flash cards?First turn on the Robinson Curriculum program. At the top of the screen, click on the "vocabulary" tab. (The phonics and math flash cards are also in this section.) At the bottom of the screen, click on the "Print Flash Cards" tab. If you want to see a preview, click to put a check in the print preview box. Note: If you only want to print out one page of flash cards, do not have this box checked. If you have the box checked, all the flash cards will be printed if you print from the preview section. To find out what page you need to print, first check the box to print to the print preview. Scroll through the pages until you see what page numbers you need to print. Then close the print preview, unclick the box, and then print the flash cards. A box will come up asking you what pages you want to print. If you want to print the vocabulary flash cards, click the box as to if you want to print word/definiton flash cards, or word/sentence flash cards. Click the print button for the type of flash cards that you want to print.
Follow the instructions above, but make sure the print preview box does NOT have a check in it.When I print vocabulary words, why do I sometimes get words from a different book?
When you go to print the vocabulary, while you are choosing the book name, make sure you have a zero in the "include previous number of books" box. This way you will only print out the vocabulary for that book that you choose.
NOTE: Sometimes there are very few vocabulary words for a certain book (like the Second McGuffey Reader for Example) In those cases words from another book that a lot of vocabulary words were used. So, if you see words from a different book on occasion, this is not a problem with the program or the one that is printing the flashcards. This is just how the curriculum was written.
There is only one order for printing out the math flashcards -- the order they are in the program. Either print out all the flashcards at one time, and then choose the flashcards in the order you want your child to learn them; or scan through the pages, write down the pages that you need, and then print out the pages you need as you need them.Is there a book list of all the books on the Robinson Curriculum?
Yes. Check out my Reading page for the book lists. How do you use the phonics cards that come with the curriculum?
You can make your own way of using the flash cards, or you can use them in conjunction with the McGuffey readers, or other phonic curriculum that you have. To use with the McGuffey readers, as each lesson introduces a new sound, add that card to the flash cards that your child is working on.How do I know when my child is ready for Saxon 5/4?
First make sure your child knows all the math facts well. Also make sure that your child can read well enough to read each lesson in Saxon well enough to understand it. Once those two criteria are met, your child should be ready for Saxon 5/4.
